There are many reasons to consider getting a pet ? and many reasons not to. Fish make great pets for a number of reasons ? most of them reasons not to get other types of pets.
First of all, fish are the quietest pets. They won?t put on bizarre opera performances with other cats in the middle of the night, bark at their shadow, or make shrill squawking noises when hungry or upset.
Fish don?t do their business where they aren?t supposed to, or make you do the unpleasant task of cleaning up their waste. They don?t need to be house trained, and their bowls or tanks only have to be cleaned out once a month ? not every couple of days like bird and hamster cages.
Fish don?t shed ? and if they do, they live with it, not you. Fish will not cover the leg of your black pants with hair, or shed on your couch and clog the vacuum cleaner. They don?t bring up hairballs either. They don?t jump up and leave paw marks on your new shirt, and they won?t shred the couch or the curtains.
Fish won?t eat you out of house and home ? and they won?t steal the food off your plate either. Because fishes swim in tanks of water, they do not need any bathing, brushing, water, or shade. Aside from feeding them, fish don?t need any daily maintenance, like taking them out for a walk or roughhousing with them or throwing a Frisbee for them to catch. They won?t do any harm to your lawn, to your plants, or your car tires either.
Loud noises don?t mean a thing to fishes. This means you can celebrate holidays like New Year?s Day or the Fourth Of July without having to worry about tranquilizing your excitable pets, or seeing them all bloodied up from fireworks explosions when you get home.
You can talk to fish ? and they don?t talk back. They won?t expect you to be at their beck and call 24/7. They are fun to watch, and pretty, and easy to care for. And you don?t need to open any cans or clean any bowls of food ? all you need to do is sprinkle a few flakes of fish food twice a day to keep your fish from going hungry.
Now, for the drawbacks ? fish act indifferent to your being present as their master/owner. They won?t keep you warm in the winter months or brush against your leg to show affection. You won?t be able to play with them unless you consider tapping on the aquarium glass as playtime. They won?t comfort you if your significant other leaves you for another guy/girl, or visit you in your room when you?re too sick for school or work. If you can live with all these drawbacks, then a fish, or several fishes would be just perfect for you.
