Rezoning makes way for more retail, business opportunities ...

To make way for more commercial opportunities in town, Middletown town council approved a rezoning along the south side of Middletown-Warwick Road Monday night.

Developer Rick Wooden said that he has been receiving inquiries from companies and that it will be easier to reel businesses in if they know that the land allows for commercial properties.

Middletown Mayor Ken Branner let the secret out Monday night that the developer has been in contact with Belk Department Stores about bringing one of the popular southern-based retail stores to the town.

?We have received inquiries of high value uses with all of the activity on the road,? Wooden said.

The 33-acres of Kohlprop South, LLC are on the northerly side of Patriot Drive near U.S. Route 301. With Wal-Mart, Kohl?s and the new Amazon Distribution Site being built, the area has a lot of thru traffic.

The rezoning was passed unanimously by town council because of job opportunities that could be stemmed from having so many new retail shops and businesses in the area.

Council members said that a shopping center of this type would contribute to the town?s economic development and bring jobs to the town, region and state.
