ANALYSIS | The touchdown of the Atlantis orbiter, after a perfect mission to the International Space Station, has brought the space shuttle era to a close. Under current plans, the era of government run space travel to low Earth orbit has also ended.

The space shuttle program itself was a 40 year experiment in running a government space line, taking crews, cargo, and satellites to low Earth orbit. The shuttle was supposed to lower the cost of space travel, thus making a return to the Moon and missions to Mars more practical. The shuttle did not fulfill that promise for a number of reasons, the most significant of which is that while the government does some things well, it rarely does anything cheaply.

Still, the space shuttle program accomplished a lot. The shuttle helped to build the International Space Station, which will be the focus of human space flight for the next decade or so. The shuttle deployed and serviced the Hubble space telescope, which has revealed so much of the nature of the universe. The shuttle launched numerous satellites, conducted long term Spacelab missions, and generally advanced the art of space flight in low Earth orbit.

The plan now is to try again to develop a system to lower the cost of space travel to low Earth orbit, this time with privately developed space craft financed primarily through U.S. government subsidies, but also some private investment. The approach of using massive government subsidies to develop commercial space craft has been criticized for a number of reasons.

Some believe that the commercial approach is too risky to bet the future of human space travel. The Bush administration had a public option in the Ares 1/Orion space craft that would have been available if the private sector failed to step up or ran into delays. The Obama administration killed that project and has essentially gone all in with government financed, privately run space craft.

Some have also pointed out the problems in a commercial system in which the government is not only the primary investor, but also the primary customer. Not a lot of attention on the part of the government has been directed toward helping commercial space firms develop private markets for their space craft, say by passing the Rohrabacher "zero gravity/zero taxes" bill. Already, some have expressed fears that NASA, through concerns for crew safety, will try to micromanage the development of these commercial space craft, increasing the cost and delaying the beginning of their operation.

Finally there are concerns about the ultimate cost of a government subsidized commercial space craft program. As an article in Aviation Week points out, while the commercial crew projects such as the SpaceX Dragon/Falcon 9 project have not yet hit snags, they are still early in their development cycles. There is not as much transparency in either the finances or the technical status of the projects. If commercial space projects run into problems, as such projects have a tendency to do, the American tax payer may be on the hook for more money beyond the almost six billion dollars now allocated.

Still, the SpaceX system has had one successful flight, launching an unmanned Dragon into Earth orbit, then reentering it into the Earth's atmosphere for a successful splash down in the Pacific. The next test, scheduled for a November launch, would involve a cargo mission to the ISS by an unmanned dragon. A successful test would presage the beginning of commercial cargo flights to the space station. The Dragon and Boeings CST-100 are being developed for manned flights as well, starting in 2015.

One in three UK workers admits they skip off work (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters Life!) ? One in three British workers admits to skipping off work -- mainly because they are bored with their jobs, according to research by global consulting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).

A third of 1,190 respondents to a survey conducted by PwC admitted that they had taken time off work under false pretenses. That prompted the consultants to conduct a second separate survey, which received responses from 1,200 people who all admitted they had skipped off work.

More than 80 percent of those who admitted having "skived" off work said they offered illness as an excuse for their absence and 61 percent said they ditched work because they were bored or depressed.

The research also revealed that 15 percent of those who skipped off work felt they had been working hard and deserved the time off, whereas 21 percent "pulled sickies" in order to tend to "family responsibilities."

"Absenteeism costs British Business around 32 billion pounds ($51.6 bln) a year, but our findings suggest a large chunk of this loss is preventable. If people are bored and depressed with their jobs, employers need to think creatively how they can get people back in gear," PwC partner Neil Roden said.

He said that introducing or enhancing flexible working arrangements could make a difference and that ensuring people felt they were not being taken for granted was also important.

"Some 15 percent of those who provided false excuses felt they deserved the time," Roden said. "With UK absenteeism levels double those recorded in the US, it is vital British employers get to grips with the problem to ensure the UK remains competitive."

Four out of 10 people who shirked work faked symptoms around the office before "pulling a sickie" and half of all excuses involved "gastro-related" problems. Inventive excuses included "falling out of the loft" and being "beaten up by a bouncer."

Pet-related explanations for taking unwarranted leave also represented a large proportion of excuses. Dogs featured most frequently, followed by budgerigars and then hamsters.

Four lessons mobile marketers can learn from auto racing | Market ...

At the end of every marketing campaign, regardless of channel, is the age-old question of, ?Was it successful??

Depending on what you are trying to accomplish, ROI is always a different metric. For mobile marketing, it is often engagement and loyalty. Did my mobile marketing campaign help me connect with and/or gain a loyal fan?

We want to help answer that question.

Based on real data from real campaigns that we have run, we are taking a look-back at what exactly makes a campaign successful and how you can apply this information to your own campaigns.?

In looking at the first bit of data, it is hard to put into words how excited I am about what we are starting to uncover.

I feel like Danny Noonan when the putt finally dropped, I feel like I just came downstairs and found a Nintendo under the Christmas tree ? with the Duck Hunt gun. I feel like, well, I feel like I am starting to learn something really significant.?

We started off looking at campaigns focused on an event. That event shall remain nameless as to protect our fantastic relationship with a great client who has a very? shall we say ?robust? PR process and therefore is not ready to star on a blog. What I can say though, is that it involves auto racing.?

Auto racing is a sport like no other and draws enthusiastic fans across the country.

However, there are some connecting elements that auto racing has to other marketing initiatives that can provide some lessons, particularly when it comes to mobile marketing.

Mobile marketing campaigns have the power of the personal. A mobile phone is a consumer?s most personal device.

Like concerts and other sporting events, auto racing draws passionate fans, making mobile a really good way to interact with consumers ? turning them into active participants instead of passive fans.

Here are some lessons we learned as we looked back at our auto racing campaign data.

Lesson No. 1: Opt-outs happen ? mostly on the day of the event
For auto racing, this is usually Friday, Saturday or Sunday. This is interesting because in the cases we looked at messages were not limited to those days.

You would expect opt-outs to happen when messages were sent, but we found a disproportionate number of opt-outs on days when the race actually happened.?

Lesson No. 2: Every message matters, but the first messages really matter
You expect some people to drop off at the beginning of a campaign. They opt-in, get a few messages, then realize they do not really want to keep getting messages, and they opt-out.

The really interesting thing here is that half of all opt-outs will likely take place during the first nine messages.

So what does this mean? Well, make sure you pay extra attention to the first few messages you send people. They have paying really close attention to them and will weigh them heavily when considering if they want to stay loyal to your list.?

Lesson No. 3: Loyal fans are ? well ? really loyal
For subscribers who stuck around for the first 75 messages of a campaign, approximately 80 percent of them stay with the campaign until it ends.

We are starting to see a trend when it comes to number of days in the program too, which will be another riveting post soon.??

Lesson No. 4: Loyalty is awesome but action is even better
When I was in high school, I ran for class president and lost. I will never forget one of my friends telling me, ?Man, I was sure you?d win so I didn?t even vote for you!?

That is when I learned loyalty is great, but getting a loyal person to act is way more important.

In looking at the data, it is apparent that some messages are way better than others at compelling people to act. It is interesting to see how the structure of a message seems to matter a lot ? even more than I anticipated.

Do not worry, we are going to dig a little deeper into this and find out why.?

So what have we learned from auto racing?

We have learned that while first impressions are critical, and loyalty is valuable, actions really do matter most.?

So if you are creating a mobile club, make sure you think about what is going to get someone to act.? Loyalty is great, but without action it is not going to win you any elections.
