EPA, DOE Announce 'Most Efficient' Energy Star Appliances (ContributorNetwork)

This Thursday, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) along with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) are recognizing some of the most energy-efficient products under the Energy Star label program. This recognition will help consumers make more informed decisions on which household appliances are the most energy-efficient and will help lower household energy bills and reduce the impact on the environment.

The recognition program announced today is known as the "Most Efficient" initiative of the Energy Star program. Not only will the program aid consumers in their purchases, but it will also offer incentives to manufacturers to produce and market more efficient products. The first companies to be recognized under the program include big names like LG, Sears Kenmore, Samsung, and Panasonic.

Products that fall under the "Most Efficient" Energy Star category are some of the best and most efficient products available. The products include the top five percent of the most efficient products and those recognized fall into appliance categories, including televisions, clothing washers, and refrigerators. They incorporate cutting-edge efficiency and rank well above their counterparts on the market. They also appeal greatly to environmentally-conscious consumers.

EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson spoke about the new "Most Efficient" initiative of the Energy Star program. Jackson said, "This new designation will help Americans save money and cut pollution by quickly pointing them to the best Energy Star products have to offer. Highlighting Energy Star's Most Efficient products is a great way to encourage the strides in innovation that bring even more energy and money saving choices to our stores. We know American consumers are eager to make purchases that save them money on their utility bills and reduce the pollution in the air we breathe, and these labels will help them identify the best ways to find those purchases."

DOE Secretary Steven Chu emphasized the benefits that consumers would see due to the new initiative. Chu said, "Over the last two decades, the Energy Star program has consistently offered consumers energy choices that have helped families save billions of dollars on their energy bills. The new Most Efficient designation is the next step towards encouraging new, more energy-efficient products to enter the market, so that consumers will have even more choices when it comes to high performance, high efficiency products that will save them energy and money."

Environmental Leader News reported that the new most-efficient products will be receiving labels recognizing their status. In total, those announced today as most-efficient include 15 washing machines, 18 televisions, and four central air conditions/heating pumps. Both the DOE and the EPA are planning on inducting more appliances into the program.
